Design Manager

About The Role

With continued strong growth across the industrial and commercial construction sector, Q Design & Construct is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our Pre-Construction team.

This role is critical to leading and coordinating the design function across multiple projects, ensuring compliance, constructability, safety, and value engineering. You will be responsible for managing consultants and design teams to deliver robust, efficient and practical solutions that align with project objectives, statutory requirements, and client expectations.

About You

You are a highly focused, detail-oriented, and collaborative professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You bring:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural preferred), Construction Management, Architecture, or similar.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a design management role within the construction industry.
  • Proven experience in delivering industrial/commercial projects up to ~$75M.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian building codes, standards, OHS, environmental and quality systems.
  • Proficiency in Procore (or similar), MS Project, Excel, Bluebeam, and PDF editing/mark-up software.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build trust.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

What You Need To Excel In The Role

As Design Manager, you will:

    • Lead, manage and review the work output and performance of the design team.
    • Oversee consultant selection, briefing, scope preparation, and engagement to ensure best outcomes.
    • Manage the design process from concept through to IFC documentation, ensuring compliance and constructability.
    • Provide technical guidance, value engineering and innovative solutions during tender, design and delivery phases.
    • Review and verify design documentation, identifying and resolving discrepancies, clashes and omissions.
    • Chair and document design meetings, driving timely resolution of issues.
    • Collaborate with project delivery teams to align design outcomes with methodology, program and budget.
    • Liaise with clients to build strong, enduring relationships.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives and promote QDC’s reputation for technical excellence.
